Final Verdict: How Much Protein Do You Really Need?
Protein is important for building muscle.
But you do not need to turn every meal into a protein-eating competition.
For most healthy adults performing resistance training:
1.6–2.0 g/kg of protein per day is an excellent practical target.
If you want one simple number:
Start around 1.8 g/kg/day.
That would mean roughly:
- 60 kg: 108 g/day
- 70 kg: 126 g/day
- 80 kg: 144 g/day
- 90 kg: 162 g/day
- 100 kg: 180 g/day
Spread that protein across several meals.
Choose protein sources you enjoy.
Use whey if it makes your diet easier.
And remember that protein is only one part of building muscle.
You still need:
- Progressive resistance training.
- Enough calories.
- Carbohydrates and fats.
- Sleep.
- Recovery.
- Consistency.
The person eating 180 grams of protein while training poorly will usually make less progress than the person eating 140 grams while following a well-designed training program consistently.
The goal is not to consume the most protein possible.
The goal is to consume enough protein to support the training you are already doing well.
